Release of Tennis Elbow

High Quality and Affordable release of tennis elbow procedure at world-class orthopedic hospitals in India

In medical language Tennis elbow is known as 'Lateral epicondylitis'. In this, inflammation of the tendon occurs on the outer side of the elbow. The cause is extensive use of extensor tendons of elbow known as Extensor Carpi Radialis (ECRB) tendon. It generally occurs while playing tennis hence it is called Tennis Elbow.

The initial symptoms include tenderness and pain in elbow while applying pressure to the elbow, swelling is also observed at times, shooting pain is felt when hand is straightened or while lifting heavy objects or shaking hands. In this condition the pain occurs over the bony bump present on the outside of the elbow.

Primary treatment includes administering pain killers and anti-inflammatory medicines. A tennis elbow strap might also be used to limit the stress on the Extensor Carpi Radialis (ECRB) tendon. Ice massage and physiotherapy are also used to treat this ailment. If after using all these treatment options also no relief is felt than certain steroid injections are used. And once none of the above mentioned method seems fruitful, than surgery is the only option.

This surgery to treat the tennis elbow is done on an out-patient basis. The surgery includes two major steps. The first step includes removal of damaged tissue and in the second step the healing response is stimulated in the affected area. This surgery can be performed both percutaneously (i.e. an Open surgery) and arthroscopically (i.e. a key hole surgery)

  • In a Percutaneous surgery incision is made outside of the joint and surgeon identifies the location of tendon and removes the damaged portions subsequently. The underlying bone is than exposed in order to stimulate blood flow to this region. The remaining tendons are repaired by surgeons by using sutures which are anchored in the bone itself. Finally incisions are closed and the patients arm is placed in a splint after putting in sterile bandage.

  • In an arthroscopic procedure a camera is put in the joint through one of the portals created by the surgeon, and through other incision small instruments are inserted to repair the problem. When the surgery is over elbow is covered with a sterile bandage and splint and kept for a week to allow healing of incisions.

The recuperation period is normally one week, but full recovery only happens in 3 months. Elbow strengthening exercises can be done only after 6 weeks of the surgery.
