Child's Heart

The heart starts forming as a single tubular structure at about the fourth week of pregnancy, when the child is still a foetus. By the eight week , this tube will gradually increase in length, eventually twisting upon itself. A wall or septum grows to divide the upper (atrial) and lower (ventricular) chambers into left and right sides. Four valves made up of tissues develop , which keeps blood moving forward through the heart chambers, lungs and body as the heart pumps. There are times when the natural process is disturbed due to various factors. These factors may be genetic or environmental. Unfortunately, something that we do not have control over. These multiple genetic and environmental factors can interact to alter the development of the heart during the early stages of a foetus' development thus causing a defect in the heart of the child which is known as 'Congenital Heart Defect' or CHD.

A Congenital Heart Disease (CHD) is a defect in the structure of the heart which is present at birth. Many of such diseases either obstruct blood flow in the heart or vessels near it, or cause blood to flow through the heart in an abnormal pattern. Heart defects are among the most common birth defects and approximately 9 people in 1000 are born with a congenital heart defect. Many of the defects do not need treatment but complex congenital heart defects require medication or surgery.

Congenital Heart Disease (CHD) range from simple defects with no symptoms to complex defects with severe, life threatening symptoms. Some of the commonly occurred CHDs are:

  • Atrial Septal Defect (ASD)

  • Coarctation of the Aorta (COA)

  • Patent Ductus Arteriosus (PDA)

  • Tetralogy of Fallot ( TOF)

  • Ventricular Septal Defect (VSD)

  • Atrioventricular Canal Defect (ACD)

  • Hypoplastic Left Heart (HLH) Syndrome

  • Pulmonary Atresia (PAtr)

  • Transposition of the Great Arteries (TGA)

Many congenital heart defects have very few or no signs/symptoms. A doctor may not even detect the signs of the heart defect during a physical examination. Nonetheless, some heart defects do have signs and symptoms. Because CHD's often compromise the heart's ability to pump blood and to deliver oxygen to the tissues of the child's body, they often produce signs such as poor appetite, abnormal heart murmur, diminished strength of the baby's pulse, difficulty in breathing ,increased rate of breathing, weight loss or failure to gain weight, sweating especially during feeding and change in the colour of lips or tongue or nails.
