Affordable and High quality Endoscopic Carpal Tunnel Surgery at top orthopedic hospitals in India

This surgery is advised to the patients who are suffering from Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. This syndrome occurs when there is some problem in the median nerve of the hand which is connected with the index finger, thumb, middle finger, and half of the ring finger. This syndrome may cause the following problem in the fingers and less commonly in the palm :

  • Tingling

  • Numbness

  • Weakness and

  • Pain in the fingers

An Endoscopic Carpal Tunnel Surgery is opted only when medications do not provide any relief and/or is there is severe damage to the median nerve. As also with the help of a nerve test result is a risk is seen to this nerve or there is severe loss of hand or finger function than also this surgery is considered.

As the name suggests, an endoscope is used in this surgery. An endoscope is a flexible thin tube with a camera, this helps the surgeon by guiding through the wrist so as to reach the affected area. Because of the presence of this instrument the whole area need not be opened with a large incision. As also the healing time is reduced to quite an extent.

Procedures

This is not a very major surgery and thus do not take more than an hour and it is generally done on an outpatient basis if there are no other severe complications.

Firstly a small incision is made to enter the endoscope. The incisions can be made through a Single portal technique or a two portal technique. In a single portal technique a tiny incision is made in the wrist through which a tube is inserted which carries both the camera and the instruments. And in a two portal method one incision is made in the wrist and the other one in the palm and the camera and instruments are inserted through these separate incisions.

In the second step the transverse carpal ligament is cut to release the pressure in the median nerve and thus the patient is relieved of all the symptoms like pain, tingling sensation etc. And the gap that is created by cutting the ligament gets filled with scar tissues as the time passes. Post the surgery the incisions are sutured and bandaging done.

For a couple of weeks patients are advised to keep away from heavy usage of the hand. Physiotherapy is also required for a few weeks for proper rehabilitation. If the surgery has been done on a non-dominant hand than the patient may resume the regular activities in a couple of days. But if the dominant hand has been operated upon than the patient should wait for at least 2-4 weeks.

Risk and Complications

The prevalence of complications post surgery has been negligible but still the same cannot be waived off completely. Following are some of the risks of the surgery :

  • Infection and

  • Damage to blood vessels and nerves or tendon
