Birmingham Hip Resurfacing(BHR)

Affordable Birmingham Hip Resurfacing Surgery at World-class Orthopedic Hospitals in India

This procedure is used for the removal of the damaged layer of the bone and the cartilage and replacing it will a metallic surface implant. The main benefit of this surgery is that it is bio-mechanically and anatomically similar to the natural hip joint thus it helps in increasing stability, flexibility and mobility. Also it is a bone-conservative method unlike a hip replacement surgery.

A Birmingham Hip Resurfacing surgery is very advantageous for people who are under 65 years of age as it causes minimal bone loss along with normal unrestricted functions and mobility. This surgery is carried out in patients suffering from Osteoarthritis, Developmental dysplasia, inflammatory arthritis and avascular necrosis. Relatively older patients can also benefit from this surgery if they have good bone stock and the bone quality is strong enough to support the implant. The major benefits of this surgery are as follows :

  • The implant used in Birmingham Hip Resurfacing surgery is bone-conserving as minimal quantity of bone is to be removed for implantation.

  • The metal on metal hip joint is more wear resistant than the traditional metal on plastic hip joints used in total hip replacement surgeries.

  • The size of the femoral head of the implant is similar to the natural size hence it provides greater stability and less chances of dislocation.

Procedure

The surgery is conducted under spinal anesthesia although a general anesthesia may also be used if required. The total time taken for the surgery is about 2-3 hours and the patient has to stay in the hospital for about a week.

In the first step an incision is made in the sides in a similar way as they are done in a traditional hip replacement surgery. Then the cartilage is shaved to prepare a socket and the affected portion of the hip bone is removed. Thereafter with the use of bone cement an appropriate sized socket is pressed in to the bone. In this surgery the canal and the femoral head are preserved thus the risk of micro-fracture of the femur in un-cemented stem implantation is waived off. Also as the ball size of the implant is large hence the risk of dislocation is also reduced. And because of the metallic surface of the implant the risk of Osteolysis (dissolving of bone) and loosening of implant are reduced.

The healing of the incisions occur in about 2 weeks time whereas the tissues within are healed completely in about 6 weeks. And till 6 weeks the patient has to walk with the help of crutches. Painkillers are administered and icepack is used to reduce inflammation.

Risks and Complications

Like any other orthopedic surgery a BHR also carries the following risks but these can be taken care of with the help of medications and good care :

  • Infection at the incision site or in the tissues

  • Blood clotting

  • Damage to nerves or blood vessels

  • Breakage or bone during implantation>

  • Breakage or displacement of the implant
